Traditional closeboard fencing is probably the most common type of fencing available. It is nearly
always constructed on site mainly due to the weight of the panels but also because it's easier to see
the natural rises and falls of the garden or boundary line.
This type of fencing does have some advantages over pre-made panels. Although it takes longer to
install, the finished results are a stronger, better looking fence. Another advantage of closeboard
fencing is that it has more flexibility when it comes to placing posts in certain positions. This is
useful if you have an established garden and want to avoid trees, plants or roots. It can also be
easier to build the fence around established trees and other solid objects that may be on the fence
line as in the photo below.
Closeboard fencing is made up of individual components using either concrete or timber posts that
are morticed to take arris rails, cut to the required lenght and shaped to fit. However, the arris rails
can be fitted using repair brackets if you do not have the correct tools for shaping the rails. Gravel
boards are then fitted to the bottom of the frame. The frame is then clad with fetheredge boards.
